A Canton man is accused of drunkenly crashing into a Boston Police cruiser, earning him a fifth drunk driving charge.

“The disregard for safety here is inexcusable. Not only did this person’s conduct put himself and Boston police officers—and frankly, every other motorist in the vicinity—in danger; it also took away police resources and presence from another incident,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in announcing the charges.

On Saturday, Boston police officers responded to a crash at Morton Street and Cemetery Road, which runs through Franklin Park, and found a Dodge Ram stuck up against a light pole. The pickup truck had major front-end damage, prosecutors said, and its wheels had caved in. Nearby was a police cruiser with passenger-side and front-end damage.

The officer whose cruiser was struck said he was on a call with his partner and had his lights and sirens activated as he turned right onto Cemetery Road when the Ram struck the passenger side of the cruiser. After the collision, according to prosecutors, the officer went over to the truck and allegedly saw the driver throw a beer can over the top of the truck. The driver was allegedly in a “dazed state with glossy eyes.”

The Dodge Ram driver, Thomas Apprille, 57, of Canton, was arrested. A search of his status showed that his license was suspended. He has previously been convicted of three operating under the influence charges in the 1990s and faced subsequent operating while suspended charges, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s office. He was charged a fourth time in 2007 but was convicted of only negligence.

Apprille appeared in Boston Municipal Court’s West Roxbury branch on this new OUI charge. Judge John McDonald set bail at $4,000 and ordered that Apprille be alcohol free. Should Apprille post bail, he’ll have to wear a device that tests for alcohol daily. Apprille is next due back in court on April 16 for a pre-trial hearing.
