NextImg:Bruins notebook: Linus Ullmark ready for a fight

SUNRISE, Fla.–After facing 43 shots, Linus Ullmark had to be a bit gassed on Sunday. But as he geared up to fight the Florida Panthers’ Matthew Tkachuk with 3:11 left in the Bruins’ 6-2 win on Sunday, he wasn’t not showing an ounce of fatigue.

After Tkachuk started doing what he does, Ullmark was ready to go, throwing down his blocker, glove and mask so he could put up his dukes.

“I love it. He’s all in,” said coach Jim Montgomery.

But Ullmark’s teammates would prefer if they take care of that part of playoff hockey themselves and let the goalie continue to do the superb job he’s been doing all season.

“I think we’re going to keep Linus’ hands intact and not let him risk breaking anybody’s face, so we’re going to leave it like that,” said Brandon Carlo with a laugh.

Brad Marchand tried to handicap what a possible Ullmark-Tkachuk matchup would look like.

“(Ullmark’s) got the size and reach but maybe a little less experience than Tkachuk. Maybe one day, we’ll get to see it,” said Marchand with a grin.

Montgomery not only liked the way his goalie stuck up for himself but also the way his teammates did as well.

“As a goalie you’re just expected to stop pucks. You’re not expected to take stickwork and someone coming after you. We stick together, and we stuck together,” said Montgomery. “Really proud of the way we stuck together there. They had six players on the ice because they had the pulled goalie situation.”

Ullmark got tagged with a misconduct, but he could have continued playing, the officials told Montgomery. But the coach said he decided to take out Ullmark, who appears to be battling through some sort of injury and was slow to get up on a couple of occasions. He was not available to reporters after the game because he was receiving treatment, according to Bruins media relations.

But he was excellent again, turning away 41 shots. He was especially good at the start of the game when the Panthers had the first 10 shots on net.

“They came out with a really good push and he allowed us to weather the storm and start going back at them,” said Montgomery. “He had one where he dove across with his body in the first (for a save on Sam Reinhart). That’s a goal, right? That’s a high-end save. And he probably made four to six more of those kind. There’s one glove save he made on a rebound that was just spectacular. But he’s been doing that for us all year. It’s amazing how calm I am when I see scrambles in front of his net because he’s calm.”…

As expected, it has been a contentious series with Florida agitator Matthew Tkachuk in the middle of all of it. Late in Game 2, he was caught on a hot mic saying some ungentlemanly and unprintable things to Tomas Nosek.

Asked if Tkachuk has gone over the line, Brad Marchand – known to deliver a barb or two himself – took much bigger issue with what he feels is the invasive nature of the coverage from the league’s rights holders.

“I think the NHL and the media outlets have crossed the line in allowing those mics to continue to play and try to go down and listen to what’s said on the benches while that’s going on,” said Marchand. “There’s a reason why guys don’t want mics on the bench and that’s why. Because they’re going to take advantage of it at some point and they did. Regardless of what’s said by Tkachuk or other guys, there should never be an instance where a mic picks up any of that stuff. What’s said on the ice, what’s said on the benches should be there. That’s the way guys play, especially come playoff times. And the fact that the media outlets allowed that to happen is very disrespectful to the agreement that we have in place and that’s how guys are going to want to take them off the benches and take the guy between the benches way out of there, because it’s going to get guys in trouble. It’s not fair. It’s not right.”…

Jake DeBrusk had to leave the game in the first period after taking a Taylor Hall pass off the side of his head. He returned to score a pair of goals.

(Trainer Dustin Stuck) kind of freaked out a little bit on the bench because there was a lot of blood. But just as couple of stitches. He thought it was the ear but it was a little higher than that. But it kind of woke me up, honestly,” said DeBrusk….

Charlie Coyle and Nosek were dominant in the faceoff circle. Coyle won 15-of-19 and Nosek won 14-of-18.
