A Brazilian fugitive wanted for murder in his home country was arrested by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement operatives in Worcester.
Jaconias Rosa Pereira, 50, was sought on an open arrest warrant requiring that he serve a 15-year sentence for a murder conviction brought by Brazilian law enforcement, according to a statement released Thursday by the Boston field office of the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office.
Operatives attached to the field office’s Enforcement and Removal Operations received notice in August of Rosa Pereira’s fugitive status and located him near a residence in Worcester on Wednesday.
“Thanks to the work of our dedicated officers and the assistance of our Brazilian law enforcement partners, ERO Boston has taken this dangerous fugitive off the streets of the Commonwealth,” said Todd Lyons, the director of the ERO field office. “ICE remains committed to arresting and removing criminal fugitives like Rosa Pereira who pose a threat to the American public.”
Rosa Pereira entered the U.S. at an unknown date and at an unknown location. He is now scheduled for a court hearing with an immigration judge and will remain in ICE custody pending those proceedings.
ERO arrested more than 12,000 people with aggravated felony convictions in fiscal year 2021, according to the statement. Those include 1,506 homicide-related offenses, 3,415 sexual assaults, 19,549 assaults, 2,717 robberies and 1,063 kidnappings.
