Dueling rallies between immigration enforcement supporters and sanctuary city advocates are set to take over Boston City Hall Wednesday as Mayor Michelle Wu testifies on the city’s limited cooperation with ICE in Washington.

The demonstrations outside of City Hall come as both sides look to garner further support in their advocacy efforts amid the Trump administration’s heightened deportation efforts of illegal immigrants.

City Council President Ruthzee Louijeune and At-Large City Councilor Julia Mejia are leading a rally at 11 a.m. in front of City Hall, “standing in solidarity with immigrant communities,” alongside the Massachusetts Immigrant and Refugee Advocacy Coalition and ACLU of Massachusetts.

“In Boston, we believe in dignity, justice, and the power of standing together, and will do just that when our immigrant communities are under attack,” Louijeune said in a statement. “Boston is one of the safest big cities in the country specifically because we will not allow political intimidation to dictate how we care for our neighbors.”

The pro-sanctuary city rally is scheduled to begin after immigration enforcement advocates start their own 10 a.m. demonstration, in “support of (border czar) Tom Homan’s promised efforts to hold Mayor Wu & (Police) Commissioner Cox accountable for their crimes!” according to a flyer circulating on social media.

Homan sent a warning from Washington at the Conservative Political Action Conference on Feb. 22 that he would come to Boston, “bringing hell” to the city.” He slammed Michael Cox for the Boston Police Department’s limited cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.

“Meanwhile, opposition is also rallying to keep Boston a sanctuary city, calling basic law enforcement ‘hateful’ and ‘racist,’” X account Bostonians Against Mayor Wu posted on Feb. 24. “They put illegal immigrants before citizens.”

Boston has been a sanctuary city since 2014 under its Trust Act which prevents BPD and other city departments from cooperating with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement on federal civil detainers.

Following the rallies, the City Council is set to take up a resolution in support of legislation being deliberated at the State House around protecting immigrants and another “denouncing the rollback of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian, Venezuelan, and other designated communities, reaffirming Boston’s commitment to humanitarian protections and family unity.”

The council meets at noon.
