The city’s snow emergency was lifted at 6 a.m. Monday as residents dug out on Sunday after the record-setting storm pummeled the Hub.

The parking ban will expire early Monday morning, and the discounted parking will end two hours after the emergency lifts, Boston Mayor Michelle Wu said at a press conference on Sunday.

She also announced that Boston Public Schools will be open on Monday after the weekend’s blizzard.

“Even though our roads are clear, we really need everyone’s help to dig out the sidewalk in front of your home and in front of your property,” Wu said during a press conference on the storm at the Traffic Management Center in City Hall.

“Especially so that our young people can access bus stops, walk to school,” she added. “And anyone who is walking around, pedestrians, especially those in a wheelchair or a motorized scooter can get around.”

The parking ban on major thoroughfares remains in effect until 6 a.m. Monday so the “plows and crews can continue to do that work efficiently and quickly,” Wu said.

The 23.6 inches of snow that fell on Saturday in Boston tied the city’s 2003 record for highest snowfall total in one day, according to the National Weather Service.

The mayor’s decision to keep the snow emergency in effect until Monday morning is “extraordinarily helpful… to get as much snow as possible off the street in that time,” said Jascha Franklin-Hodge, the city’s Chief of Streets.

Also, people have 48 hours to use a space saver after the end of the snow emergency. After that, people must remove it from the street.

Space savers are banned in the South End.

Meanwhile, Cambridge’s snow emergency parking ban will be lifted at 6 p.m. on Sunday. Residents parked in one of the snow emergency off-street parking locations should exit within two hours after the ban has been lifted to avoid being charged.
