A fire ripped from the basement to the roof of a Roxbury duplex early Monday morning, trapping occupants inside, Boston Fire reported.

“At approximately (4:00 a.m.) this morning heavy fire in the rear of a 2 family occupied duplex building (on Woodbine St. in Roxbury),” Boston Fire tweeted at 4:18 a.m. Monday. “A report of people trapped in the building.”

The fire was quickly raised to two alarms and multiple teams arrived on the scene.

By 4:30 a.m., firefighters were able to rescue to occupants out of the second floor with a ground ladder out and a dog from the other unit, the department said.

Firefighters were able to control the fire before 5 a.m., Boston Fire said. There was major damage to the rear of the building, visible in a department video of one charred outer wall collapsing. Few teams remained on site after 6 a.m. to monitor the building.

One firefighter and one resident were transported by EMS with “minor injuries,” Deputy Chief Brian Tully said.

Fire residents have been displaced, Tully said, and Red Cross responded to assist with housing.
