A roof cave-in in a North End building sent authorities scrambling during a snow storm to evacuate nearby buildings and establishing a “collapse zone” around it.

Ultimately, the news was positive: no one was hurt and the building — while “compromised” and with a yawning hole on top, remains in place and is being stabilized.

First responders hustled out to the building at 41-43 Fleet Street a block off of Hanover Street in the tight-packed neighborhood around 10 a.m. Thursday, as a wet, dense snow continued to fall.

The Boston Fire Department, tweeting out assorted photos of the five-story brick building, labeled it a “partial roof collapse.” So it seemed: the BFD drone images the department released showed a large portion of the roof caved in on the lower floors.

BFD said the building was unoccupied, but that they evacuated the people in adjoining buildings “as a precaution,” displacing 12.

The various modern-age tools came out: the four-rotor drone, zipping above the building to assist the firefighters and inspectors up in a tower-ladder bucket, and a laser to detect any movement in the building, the department touted in tweets.

The department added that it established a “collapse zone” around the building, but there was no further cave-in.

Boston’s Inspectional Services Department said it sent officials to check the edifice out, and they “noted damage to the roof and masonry components.”

“Further inspection showed the integrity of the roof and parapet wall seemed to be compromised because of the increased weight from years of water build up and other factors,” and ISD spokeswoman said in a statement. “The Building Commissioner has asked the property owner to hire a licensed engineer and submit mitigation plans and drawings to the department. Additionally, the owner was ordered to hire a company to stabilize the building.”

According to city assessing records, the building at 41–43 Fleet St. was constructed in 1900 and is currently owned by Forty 3 Fleet EB LLC, with a mailing address in Marshfield. The building is an apartment building listed at four to six units. The 4,080 square foot building and the 931 square foot lot it sits on were assessed at a value of nearly $1.8 million for fiscal year 2023.

The building’s namesake LLC has no other properties listed in the city’s assessing database. A possible phone number found for the listed owner of the LLC did not appear to be in service when called at around noon. A call to another number for a listed LLC manager was not answered.
