From the Boston Symphony Orchestra to USS Constitution Museum, Boston kids will be gaining free access to performing arts institutions and historical museums twice a month under an expansion of the Boston Family Days program, Mayor Michelle Wu is set to announce at the State of the City tonight.

“Delivering an excellent education for every Boston student means making the entire city their classroom,” said Wu. “Boston’s world-class arts and cultural institutions are pillars of Boston’s vibrant community and economy, and I’m so grateful for their partnership to show our young people the world.”

Boston Family Days, launched from the previous BPS Sundays pilot program in December, allows all school-age kids in Boston free admission to nine institutions, including museums, the zoo and aquarium, and the JFK Presidential Library. Kids and two family members may attend for free on the first and second Sunday of each month through Dec. 2026.

Under the new expansion, Wu said, the city will add performing arts spaces and new historical museums to the roster of free institutions.

Kids will be able to attend shows at seven venues, including Arts Emerson, the Boston Ballet, the Boch Center, the Huntington Theatre, the Boston Lyric Opera, the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and the Wheelock Family Theatre at Boston University this spring, according to the city announcement.

The city said “program will be designed so certain performance dates will be available to families as part of Boston Family Days” and more details on which performances will be available will be shared “in the coming weeks.”

In April 2025, “in time to celebrate the 250th anniversary of Patriots’ Day,” the kids will also gain free admission to Paul Revere House, Old North Illuminated, and the USS Constitution Museum. Later in the spring, the city said, the Old State House and Old South Meeting House will be added to the program.

“Early exposure to the arts has lifelong benefits, fostering empathy and helping children develop a lasting appreciation that they carry into adulthood,” said Bradley Vernatter, Stanford Calderwood General Director & CEO of Boston Lyric Opera.

Over 50,000 students have attended cultural institutions for free through the Boston Family Days program so far, the city said.

Through the program, all pre-K, elementary and secondary students living in Boston are currently able to attend the Isabella Stewart Gardner Museum, John F. Kennedy Presidential Library, Museum of African American History, Boston Children’s Museum, Franklin Park Zoo, Institute of Contemporary Art, Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Science, and New England Aquarium.

The program is funded through a private-public partnership with supporters including Amazon, Barbara and Amos Hostetter, Barr Foundation, Bob and Michelle Atchinson, and Jim and Cathy Stone, the city said.

Non-BPS students may register to receive their passes at boston.gov Boston Family Days page.
