NextImg:Bill Belichick: Mac Jones had a ‘good offseason,’ Patriots QBs will compete in training camp

Patriots coach Bill Belichick said quarterback Mac Jones had a “good offseason” and will compete with backups Bailey Zappe and Trace McSorley during an interview Tuesday on SiriusXM Radio.

“(Jones) was one of our offseason award winners. First in, last out of the building,” Belichick said. “Really does a good job of knowing, being on top of everything we’re doing so he can lead from the quarterback position, in terms of play-calling and those types of things.”

Belichick continued with his answer about the team’s quarterbacks room by highlighting Zappe’s growth and the addition of McSorley, who started his career with the Ravens and Cardinals.

“Zappe’s way ahead of where he was last year, Pat (Kirwan), you talked about that; rookie going into his second year. And it’s been good to work with (Trace) McSorley. He has a little bit of game experience, little bit of NFL experience but is still a young player. So, we’ll see how those guys do when the real football starts, the pads come on, there’s a little bit more pass rush and so forth,” Belichick added.

“But they can all run the offense efficiently, they’re all smart. They all handle what we do so everyone else can operate efficiently. So we’ll give them a chance to compete and see how it goes.”

Through five training camp practices, Jones has taken all of the starting reps. He’s completed 33 of 60 passes and thrown two interceptions during competitive team drills, while Zappe has gone 32-of-56 working against the second-string defense. Zappe threw his first and only pick in Sunday’s practice at veteran safety Jalen Mills.
