FOXBORO — Last month, the NFL docked the Patriots two offseason practices for meeting violations.

On Wednesday, Bill Belichick cancelled their final mandatory minicamp practice for paintball.

Patriots players and coaches spent the late morning and early afternoon playing paintball as a reward for several weeks of workouts, meetings and practices. Belichick has historically cancelled the final day of minicamp after a successful offseason program. Wednesday’s paintball session, where players and coaches were split into several teams, followed past years of team-building activities including indoor soccer and games at Fenway Park.

The Patriots announced they had cancelled practice after players were informed early Wednesday morning. Tuesday’s practice had a hint of finality to it, with several competitive periods of 7-on-7 and 11-on-11 work and a long huddle at the end where Belichick and visiting Penn State coach James Franklin addressed the team. Patriots safety Jabrill Peppers said after practice he did not know whether Belichick would cancel the last practice.

Asked how the coaching staff would operate from mid-June until mid-July, when they will return to begin preparations for training camp, Belichick said Tuesday: “We evaluate where we are and we make plans for moving forward.”

Where does he feel the Patriots are now?

“I don’t know, I’m not big on the ‘where you want to be,'” Belichick said. “I think you go at the pace you go at, and go from there.”
