The best-case scenario is for a player not to be injured at all, but over a six-week preseason, 162-game season, and if a team is lucky, postseason, that’s simply not realistic.
Yet if the Red Sox are going to lose starting catcher Connor Wong to a left-hand fracture, the specific location of his injury is apparently as ideal as it gets.
“It’s a very small one,” said manager Alex Cora before Tuesday’s game. “The hand specialist was explaining to me, this is the best-case scenario, so hopefully he’ll be back with us sooner rather than later.”
In Wong’s absence, Carlos Narvaez is “going to play a lot,” Cora said. Through five games this season, Narvaez is 6 for 18 (.333) with three doubles, two runs, four RBI, four walks, and two strikeouts. He snapped his four-game hitting streak on Monday night when he had to enter the game in Wong’s place.
The Red Sox recalled fellow catcher Blake Sabol from Triple-A as backup. In 121 career games in the Majors he’s hit .243 with a .705 OPS. Through six WooSox games this year – four as starting catcher, two as designated hitter – he’s 5 for 20 (.250) with a pair of doubles, four RBI and five walks.
