DANVERS — BC High’s first trip around the Catholic Conference is off to a roaring start.
Andrew Manning blasted a three-run homer as part of a 16-hit effort while Mason Lombard fired a complete game as BC High overwhelmed rival St. John’s Prep, 16-2, in a five inning affair on Monday afternoon at Pete Frates Diamond in Danvers.
The Eagles (5-3, 3-0) have now won three league games all via run rule.
“Andrew’s first inning home run ignited us for sure,” BC High coach Steve Healy said. “We were relentless all game. Even the guys we cycled in got on base. Then Mason was efficient.”
BC High got started in the top of the first inning as three straight hits capped off by a Cole Bohane double put the visitors up 1-0. That’s when Manning took center stage as the senior first baseman connected on a moonshot to dead center for a three-run home run to give BC High a 4-0 advantage.
“I was looking for a fastball and got it and thankfully was able to do something with it,” Manning said. “We came up here expecting to win and now we’re just looking to keep it rolling in the conference.”
St. John’s Prep looked to strike back in the bottom of the first when consecutive hits put runners on the corners but Lombard induced a 1-6-3 double play to limit the damage. BC High put the game out of reach a half-inning later as it scored seven runs in a top of the second that consisted of four, two-strike hits, and three St. John’s Prep errors. Jackson Morse hit a key two-run single in the inning and then, after a dropped pop-up extended the frame, Nick McCabe lined a two RBI hit of his own to make it 11-1 BC High.
Lombard, meanwhile, allowed just one hit between the second and fifth innings to keep the hosts at bay. McCabe, Morse, Ryan Flaherty, Hayden Regan, and Wyatt Miller all had multiple hit games for BC High.
