NextImg:Battenfeld: Maura Healey hobnobbing with Washington elites again

Has Gov. Maura Healey caught Potomac fever already?

The new Democratic governor has been hobnobbing with Washington elites and increasing her national exposure at least four times since taking office in January.

Is it really that boring being a stay-at-home governor in Boston? Is Healey going to turn into another Mitt Romney, who had barely started his first gubernatorial term before running for president?

The frequent out-of-state trips are an early sign that Healey may be more interested in her national ambitions or running for U.S. Senate than staying for another term in Massachusetts.

While there don’t appear to be any openings in 2024, Healey certainly is young enough to wait another four years before laying the groundwork for a national campaign – either as president or vice president.

Healey is also close enough to President Biden that the former Massachusetts attorney general would be considered for a Biden administration appointment to the Justice Department.

The new governor’s four trips to D.C. – which require Lt. Gov. Kim Driscoll to step in as acting governor or sometimes force Secretary of State Bill Galvin to assume that role – include a stop at the White House Correspondents’ Dinner, a tradition where journalists yuk it up with the president and other elected officials.

The media may not realize that the public looks at these traditions as outdated and somewhat inappropriate.

Healey attended the dinner along with her partner, Joanna Lydgate, and according to Politico she was also hitting up other related parties that day, and was spotted talking with celebrities like Rosario Dawson, Sophia Bush and J. Smith Cameron. Maybe they were talking about how bad the T is?

Healey in February also attended Biden’s State of the Union address in the House chamber and the National Governors Association winter meetings.

The rookie governor left Massachusetts again this week to attend the Select USA Investment Summit in the nation’s capital and spoke on a panel about job creation.

While Healey was gone, she might want to pay attention again to the MBTA, which suffered another near catastrophe when a utility box at the Harvard Red Line station broke off and one of the braces holding it up struck a woman rider.

The rider was taken by ambulance to the hospital for evaluation, but it could have been much worse.

“While Red Line service continues, we are working to determine what caused the equipment to detach from its mounting,” the T said. “We will take all necessary measures to protect our riders and employees and secure our infrastructure for safer service.”

This was the second similar incident at a T station. Back in March, an insulation panel came crashing down on the platform, almost hitting a rider. In both cases, the T released video footage of the incidents.

Let’s hope Healey does not get Potomac fever as bad as Romney, who fled the state constantly to campaign for president.
