As mobile sports betting kicks off in the state and NCAA March Madness rages on, advocates are shining a light on a new program to help struggling sports bettors from losing more money.
With the Massachusetts program called Sports Wagering Voluntary Self-Exclusion (Sports Wagering VSE), Bay State sports fans now have a new way to call timeout on their gambling during March Madness and beyond.
The Massachusetts Gaming Commission designed and implemented the program in partnership with The Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health. People can self-select from a one-year, three-year, five-year, or lifetime break from sports betting.
Enrollees are banned from entering or placing a bet on sporting events at any of the state’s casinos, brick-and-mortar sportsbooks, and licensed online platforms. They also are removed from industry promotional and marketing lists.
“Perhaps you previously excluded yourself from the casino floor and wish to extend your enrollment to include sports wagering. Or maybe you’re just looking for a timeout,” said Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health CEO Marlene Warner.
“Sports Wagering Voluntary Self-Exclusion is a first step for many to help themselves regain control and stay healthy,” Warner added.
With the legalization of sports betting this January, Sports Wagering VSE serves as the next expansion in the state’s responsible gambling efforts. More than 1,300 people across the state are enrolled in Voluntary Self-Exclusion, which focuses on supporting those looking to temporarily or permanently halt casino gambling.
The Massachusetts Council on Gaming and Health encourages fans having difficulties setting limits and those already enrolled in VSE to sign up for Sports Wagering VSE.
Enrollment is free, confidential, and available 24/7. Information is never released to employers, family members, or friends. To speak with a GameSense professional, call 1-800-GAM-1234 or connect via secure LiveChat at MACGH.org.
