After the top pick for Easthampton’s superintendent lost his job offer when he used the term “ladies” in an email, the second choice for the district has withdrawn herself from running the school system amid students reporting her past Facebook posts.
The Easthampton School Committee is back to the drawing board following this latest chapter in the chaotic search for a new leader of the school district.
Erica Faginski-Stark, the director of Curriculum and Instruction at Ludlow Public Schools, is no longer in line to take over as superintendent.
On the night that the School Committee voted to not re-enter contract negotiations with first pick Vito Perrone and to instead offer the job to Faginski-Stark, students emailed the Easthampton mayor about their “extreme concerns” with the second choice.
“Under the belief that this is her Facebook account, she has posted conservative transphobic rhetoric a multitude of times,” the students wrote to Mayor Nicole LaChapelle.
“With the recent anti-trans picketing, many youth in the school are concerned and angry,” they added in the email.
The Facebook posts that the students shared were from 2021. One of the posts included a link for a petition to “Defend Title IX,” which stated that “only girls should play girls’ sports!”
Faginski-Stark in that March 2021 post wrote, “Back in January we heard a lot about breaking the glass ceiling for women. So I’m surprised by the silence out there relative to Title IX and the lack of advocacy by women on behalf of equality for women and women’s sports.”
“Ladies, the glass ceiling is more real now than it’s been in generations,” she added. “Our choice to use our voice or to remain silent will determine not only the future of women’s athletics but equality for women everywhere. It’s time to speak up.”
Faginski-Stark could not be immediately reached for comment on Thursday.
The news of Perrone losing his job offer after he called the committee chair and her assistant “ladies” in an email went viral earlier this month. Many residents ripped the School Committee for rescinding the offer and urged the board to give him another chance.
On Tuesday, the School Committee will discuss the next steps in the superintendent search process at their next meeting.
Also, when the School Committee meets on Tuesday, the board will be down one member. Shannon Dunham, who was one of the two members who voted to re-enter negotiations with Perrone, has resigned from the School Committee — citing surgery that requires a lengthy recovery.
While announcing her resignation to the board in an email, Dunham addressed the members as “Ladies and Gentlemen.”
