NextImg:After historic nor’easter blasts Massachusetts, a ‘warm up’ should melt snow this week

Bay Staters who are ready for spring after the nasty nor’easter wreaked havoc over the weekend will get to enjoy some milder weather this week.

Warmer temps on the way, along with some rain moving in, should help melt a good amount of the massive snow totals that fell across the region on Saturday.

“We have a chance to thaw out this week with a warm up on the way,” said Joe Dellicarpini, meteorologist at the National Weather Service’s Boston office.

“It should melt quite a bit of the snow this week, but we won’t lose everything by the end of the week,” he added.

Some minor flooding will be possible where drains are clogged.

After the historic nor’easter with blizzard conditions dropped up to 30 inches of snow on parts of Massachusetts, the region transitioned to clear skies and sunshine on Sunday. The cold temps on Sunday will go up close to 30 degrees on Monday, as the sunshine returns.

Then on Tuesday, temps should surpass freezing — jumping into the mid 30s with partly sunny skies.

Temperatures will go even higher on Wednesday and Thursday, climbing into the 40s as a warm front lifts through the region. Scattered light showers are possible.

Another potentially wintry storm system could impact southern New England for the latter half of the week, likely around Thursday into Friday.

“Snow could be mixing in with the rain, but it doesn’t look like a big deal,” Dellicarpini said.

Early models for the system show that the highest probability of rain changing to snow will be over interior northwest Massachusetts.

Next weekend looks to be dry and cold. Saturday should be mostly sunny with temps in the 20s, followed by temps around 30 degrees and sunny on Sunday.
