The accused killer of a Brockton nurse whose body was left at Boston Logan International Airport has been indicted on a murder charge, according to the Suffolk District Attorney’s Office.

Kevin Kangethe, a 40-year-old Lowell man who’s currently in a Kenyan prison, is accused of fatally stabbing 31-year-old Whitman woman Margaret Mbitu. She was found dead in a car in the central garage at the Boston airport in November.

Kangethe had already boarded a flight to Kenya at the time her body was found.

The alleged killer has now been indicted on a murder charge. A Suffolk County grand jury on Tuesday returned a murder indictment against him.

After Kangethe was initially captured in Kenya, he escaped from a Kenyan police station. Then, he was recaptured on Feb. 14.

Kangethe is currently in a Nairobi prison, and is expected to undergo extradition proceedings in a Kenyan court in the coming weeks.

“Suffice it to say, this has been a custody process with many twists and turns,” Suffolk District Attorney Kevin Hayden said in a statement. “Along with Margaret Mbitu’s family and friends, we are hoping that the extradition process proceeds in a smooth and timely manner.”

Hayden added, “This indictment makes clear that upon his return to Boston Kevin Kangethe will answer in Superior Court for the brutal killing of Maggie Mbitu, a nurse who cared deeply about so many and who was deeply loved by many in return.”
