A 72-year-old Ipswich man drowned in Plum Island Sound on Wednesday afternoon, according to police who are investigating the man’s death.

Ipswich Police received a report at around 3 p.m. that Ipswich Bay Yacht Club workers had spotted a person in the water around the Yacht Club’s mooring area just offshore.

Police then launched their marine unit and found a man in the water, who was brought to shore at the Yacht Club’s dock.

Ipswich first responders performed CPR and other lifesaving measures before the man was taken to Beverly Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The man is a 72-year-old Ipswich resident from the Great Neck section of town.

Police said in a statement, “The death appears to be an accidental drowning, but remains under investigation by the Ipswich Police Department and Massachusetts State Police detectives attached to the Essex District Attorney’s Office.”
