A 40-year-old man on Cape Cod suffered life-threatening injuries from a fireworks explosion on the Fourth of July, according to fire officials.

The man reportedly sustained “traumatic injuries to his leg and hand,” the Yarmouth Fire Department reported.

Firefighters responded to 18 Cocheset Path in West Yarmouth at around 7:32 p.m. on Tuesday.

The man was treated and transported to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis with serious, life-threatening injuries.

In the last few weeks ahead of the Fourth of July, officials have emphasized that fireworks are illegal in Massachusetts — and stressed that residents should “leave fireworks to the professionals.”

Last week before the holiday, Massachusetts State Police seized a massive amount of fireworks and arrested a Springfield man.

The fireworks — 64 packages in all — were seized and transferred to the custody of the State Police Bomb Squad for disposal.

The unlicensed possession, use and sale of fireworks are illegal in the Bay State. Every year around this time, fireworks flow into Massachusetts from neighboring states, and State Police are on the lookout for the illegal products.

“Fires and explosions caused by illegal #Fireworks rebounded last year after a decline in 2021 — and so did injuries and property damage,” the Massachusetts Department of Fire Services tweeted. “Don’t risk life, limb, or a day in court: leave fireworks to the professionals.”
