A massive fire in a parking garage at the Jacksonville airport forced evacuations, a closure of the airport, the loss of 50 cars, and structural damage to the building.
There is not yet confirmation of the make and model of the vehicle that started this horrible conflagration. Local authorities have not yet confirmed that the vehicle that started this fire was in fact an EV, but I have little doubt.
”Officials say about 50 cars were damaged in fire at JAX hourly garage”
In a press conference, Mayor Donna Deegan said there were about 50 cars that were damaged from the fire that was still burning, but under control. Deegan also said the fire started on the second floor with one car and spread to other cars.
Fire chief Keith Powers is reported as stating that that there was a partial collapse on the second and third floors, then a secondary collapse about 30 minutes later, to which he added, “We’re not putting firefighters in there.”
Here is a picture of the original car spontaneously erupting in flames, with fire blasting sideways and igniting neighboring cars.
An Australian EV skeptic who has a popular You Tube channel under the name “MGUY” did an analysis of what is known so far. In his analysis posted yesterday he looked at several reasons the Jacksonville garage fire was likely started by a runaway thermal event, including a TV interview with an eyewitness who watched it all start. The eyewitness said, “There was a car on fire underneath, and the flames started spreading to the other cars, and their tires started catching on fire, and they just started going off, one after the other.”
My translation is that a thermal runaway event involving an electric vehicle caused a blowtorch of fire to come out from underneath the EV, igniting the tires of neighboring cars, which then exploded in flame when their gas tanks caught fire, causing more cars to catch fire.
For all the EV fanboys who will write me to state that this is proof that ICE cars are also dangerous, because they catch fire too, your argument is a non-starter. ICE cars do not spontaneously erupt in flames when parked with the ignition off.
Below is a picture of the vehicle that started the fire. It is the one on the left with the little white circle on the windshield. I have a strong suspicion what kind of vehicle this is, but I am not completely positive. Are any of you Car ID guys able to figure what make and model this vehicle carcass is?
If my suspicions are correct, and this awful fire that caused parts of an airport parking garage to collapse was due to an EV runaway thermal, we need to get serious about prohibiting EVs from parking in multi-car garages.
No one would argue for the right to park a McVeigh-type fertilizer bomb in a parking garage, so why are we allowing unstable lithium car bombs into public garages?
