CNN fired him because he was too clownish and nakedly partisan even for their communist indoctrination organization, but their ratings failed to improve, and their credibility never recovered, either. Once you're a whore, you will always be a whore in the eyes of many, and CNN had sed too many cks under the bridge to reset its reputation.
