Most modern cars have lots of cameras looking in every direction...for parking assist and back-up assist and hands-off driving and cruise control, etc.

And more and more people are installing aftermarket cameras that record the drunk blowing through the red light and totalling your car, or the idiot swerving into your lane or rear-ending you at a stop sign.

Great! Fine idea. But why aren't cars equipped with hard drives that store the data already being provided by the onboard cameras? Why do we have to buy and install aftermarket stuff that duplicates the equipment already installed in the car?
