WASHINGTON--FBI Director Christopher Wray said Tuesday that the Covid pandemic was probably the result of a laboratory leak in China, providing the first public confirmation of the bureau's classified judgment of how the virus that led to the deaths of nearly seven million people worldwide first emerged.
"The FBI has for quite some time now assessed that the origins of the pandemic are most likely a potential lab incident in Wuhan," Mr. Wray told Fox News. "Here you are talking about a potential leak from a Chinese government-controlled lab."
Mr. Wray added that the Chinese government has been trying to "thwart and obfuscate" the investigation that the Federal Bureau of Investigation, other parts of the U.S. government and foreign partners have been carrying out into the origin of the pandemic, but that the bureau's work continues.
The Wall Street Journal reported Sunday that the FBI had come to the conclusion with "moderate confidence" in 2021 that the Covid-19 pandemic was likely the result of an accidental lab leak and still holds to this view.
The U.S. Department of Energy, the Journal also reported, now also judges the pandemic was most likely the result of an unintended lab leak. The Energy Department reached that assessment with "low confidence" as a result of new intelligence and it represents a shift from its previous position in 2021 which was undecided.
The FBI and Energy Department's assessments are included in a classified report that was provided to the White House and some lawmakers earlier this year.

Four other intelligence agencies that officials haven't named and the National Intelligence Council, which conducts long-term strategic analysis, still favor the theory that the virus emerged when it leapt from an animal to a human, though with "low confidence."
As John Sexton notes, all of the non-scientists who are not staying in their lanes, all of the late night unfunny clowns, all of the media "journalist" televangelists for the Progressive Technocratic God-State, were furiously pushing back against the DOE's finding that the virus was created in the lab, noting that this finding was only made with "low confidence."
Why, they all said, speaking from the same script, four other agencies found that the virus arose from zoonotic transfer, natural evolution!
What they failed to point out, Sexton noted, was that these agencies' confidence level in that finding was also... "low confidence."
Isn't that awfully funny? That they would stress the "low confidence" of a finding they don't like and then refuse the report the exact same "low confidence" of a finding they do like?
They also overlooked the FBI's already-disclosed report that the virus was created in a lab, made with "moderate confidence."
Remember, they're the media: And they only tell the truth.

COLLINS: "Do you think that it would be helpful if they declassified the new intelligence that is around this that has caused the DOE to change its assessment?"
BIRX: "You know, I think it's important that a group gets together of scientists, particular molecular virologists, and moves past all of the politics and say, 'What do we really know? What do we know now about this virus, how it mutates, how it spreads through humans? What do we know that China was doing?' And it makes total sense that China was working on a vaccine and growing these -- growing these viruses in tissue culture. That changes the virus over time. That's what you do in the laboratory. And so, it makes sense. And I think really getting people to get -- I know we are never going to get the data from China. China has not been transparent. We saw in that their recent outbreak.
It's almost as if, among the Technocratic Non-Elite, it has long been common knowledge and beyond any real doubt that covid-19 leaked from the Wuhan lab. It's that that it was yet another Noble Lie our Priests of Knowledge created that it sprung like a miracle from nature, from a bat that somehow migrated 1200 miles to join its very fellows who had been captured and brought to the Wuhan Bat Respiratory Virus Lab, and at the Wuhan wet-market, where scientists from the Wuhan Bat Respiratory Virus Lab bought meat on their way home from a day of mutating bat respiratory viruses, there discharged their lethal viral loads upon a pangolin to further mutate.
