Only living in open oceans with depths of at least 4,265 feet, goblin sharks are rarely observed or recorded while alive. Scientists believe the animal only comes to the water's surface at night and spends most of their life living in nearly-complete darkness.

Goblin sharks are not fished commercially and are mostly captured by people fishing other species.

The only living member of the genus family Mitsukurina, the goblin shark's lineage dates back 125 million years.

Nicknamed the "living fossil," goblin sharks are believed to be on average three to four meters in length, though a female goblin shark measuring six meters long was caught in the year 2000.
