Amid Trump crackdown, illegal border crossings plunge to levels not seen in decades
The number of migrants crossing the U.S. southern border illegally in President Trump's first full month in office plunged to a level not seen in at least 25 years, according to preliminary government data obtained by CBS News.
Last month, Border Patrol recorded about 8,450 apprehensions of migrants who crossed into the country unlawfully between official entry points along the U.S.-Mexico border, the statistics show.
On some days during a record spike in illegal crossings under the Biden administration, Border Patrol recorded more than 8,000 apprehensions in a single day.
February's total, which could be adjusted when the government officially publishes the statistics, would be the lowest monthly apprehensions tally recorded by Border Patrol since at least fiscal year 2000, the last period with public monthly data. The final tallies usually don't deviate much from the preliminary figures.
Over the past 25 years, the only time monthly apprehensions came close to the level recorded in February was in April 2017, when Border Patrol apprehended 11,000 migrants at the southwest border, agency data show.
The Trump Administration has removed over 50,000 criminal aliens, and Trump is unsatisfied with this pace.
When immigration agents were first ordered to deport Ivan Oramas and Santos Maradiaga-Villalta, President George W. Bush was in the White House and the iPhone was a distant dream.
That was over two decades ago--yet both men were arrested this week, according to federal data reviewed by DailyMail.com.
They were among over 50,000 illegal immigrants removed so far, a Department of Homeland Security official revealed to DailyMail.com.
News of their arrest was circulated Thursday in an internal immigration memo noting recent enforcement actions made by President Donald Trump's administration.
Oramas, 61, is a citizen of Cuba with a rap sheet including convictions for sexual battery and aggravated assault.
His sexual battery case caused serious injury, according to his charges in the file.
ICE Houston nabbed Oramas this week, enforcing a deportation order first handed down in October 2003--21 years overdue.
Maradiaga-Villalta, a 40-year-old alien from Honduras, has convictions for smuggling aliens into the U.S. He was arrested recently by ICE in Phoenix. His first deportation order dates back to January 2006, a 19-year lapse in action.
Now, as Trump's administration continues ramping up its crackdown on illegal immigration, these long-evading, at large fugitives are getting taken in after decades of delays.
Department of Homeland Security Sec. Kristi Noem announced that in conjunction with Border Czar Tom Homan, immigration officials have already apprehended over 20,000 at large illegal aliens since Trump was sworn in.
'That's a 627% increase in monthly arrests compared to just 33,000 at large arrests under Biden for ALL of last year,' she wrote in a post on X.
In another post on the platform she bragged that DHS has slashed border encounters from 15,000 a day under Joe Biden to just 200 under Trump.
It's a '15-year low,' she wrote.
Among the other criminals that surfaced in this week's federal data were Guatemalan national Alexis Aquirre-Velasquez, 37, who was ordered out of the U.S. 12 years ago in February 2013.
He was charged with four counts of indecent liberty with a child and was sentenced to 10 years in prison.
Ed Morrissey writes that Trump has exposed Democrats' decades of lying about the supposed insolvability of the issue.
Let's not pussyfoot around this point: Everything Harris and Biden said about border enforcement was a bald-faced lie. Biden and Harris didn't need that bill to enforce border security and control immigration enforcement. Trump had managed to do it without that bill for the four years of his first term. Biden and Harris created the border crisis because they wanted to force Republicans into a bad "compromise" bill that would leave illegal crossings at historic highs for as long as possible. Their progressive-elite clique detests borders and sneers at American legitimacy, and would have never even cared about the crisis unless Greg Abbott and Ron DeSantis started to bus illegals into places like Washington DC, New York, and Chicago.
Trump exposed it as a lie within less than two months in office. Trump did more to secure America's southern border in 40 days than Biden and Harris did in four years. And he did it under existing laws, with the existing resources already at the Department of Homeland Security and the Department of Defense. Congress didn't need to lift a finger to allow the executive branch to secure the borders and deal directly with the traffickers of both humans and drugs. Trump didn't even need to build the wall to get immediate results, although that will be coming.
Joe Biden lied.
Kamala Harris lied.
Nancy Pelosi lied.
Astoundingly, by which I mean "Obviously," the Democrats' are continuing to double-down on these absurd lies. Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries says Trump isn't securing the border -- the Democrats are.
