NextImg:What Flag Comes Next for Philly — the Hammer and Sickle?

City officials in Philadelphia have expressed their brotherly love for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) by flying the flag of the People’s Republic of China over City Hall on September 30 to mark the 76th anniversary of the founding of Communist China by Mao Zedong. According to a report by a local news journal, the CCP’s flag display was organized by the Philadelphia Office of Immigrant Affairs under its “Honors Diversity Flag Raising Program.”

The CCP flag represents the same evil as the Hammer and Sickle and Nazi Swastika did.

The flag raising is being promoted by the Pennsylvania United Chinese Coalition and the Fujian Hometown Association, which the House Select Committee on China alleges are part of the CCP’s “united front” effort to spread pro-CCP propaganda in the U.S. and throughout the world. Perhaps city officials will further encourage diversity by flying the Soviet Hammer and Sickle or the Nazi Swastika over City Hall. If you’re going to celebrate and commemorate the founding of one murderous regime, why not a few others? (RELATED: How Deep Is China in America’s Ballot Box?)

And the murderous regime selected by city officials to honor on September 30th just happens to be the most murderous regime in history. It may be too much to ask city officials to read the Black Book of Communism, where they would learn about the systemic atrocities committed by the CCP during the 20th century — Mao’s purges, the Great Leap Forward, the Cultural Revolution, the Tiananmen Square massacre, and so many others. (RELATED: ‘All Under Heaven’: The CCP’s Distortion of Chinese Philosophy)

Not to mention the hundreds of millions of unborn babies killed in forced abortions to enforce the CCP’s one-child policy. But one would hope that city officials in the city of brotherly love would have read about the CCP’s current persecution of the Uyghurs in Xinjiang province. Perhaps those city officials forgot about the CCP’s repression of Hong Kong residents. Perhaps they are unaware of the CCP’s aggressive moves in the South China Sea and toward the free people of Taiwan. (RELATED: Competing With China in the Gray Zone)

Of course, city officials were well aware of all of these things before raising the flag of Chinese communism over the city where the United States was born. Critics, including Rep. John Moolenaar, who chairs the Select Committee on China, urged Philadelphia’s Mayor Cherelle Parker to cancel the flag-raising ceremony, explaining the CCP’s repression of its own people and the geopolitical danger it poses to the United States, and the questionable nature of the groups sponsoring, organizing, and promoting the flag raising. Pennsylvania Senator Dave McCormick seconded Rep. Moolenaar’s plea, calling the raising of the CCP flag over Philadelphia “unacceptable.” Pennsylvania state senator Doug Mastriano also condemned the event. City officials, however, turned a deaf ear to those concerns. Pennsylvania’s Democratic governor, Josh Shapiro, was conspicuously silent about the CCP flag raising.

The CCP flag represents the same evil as the Hammer and Sickle and Nazi Swastika did. Its victims outnumber the Soviet and Nazi victims combined. The Soviet tyranny lasted a little more than 70 years. The Nazi tyranny lasted 12 years. The CCP tyranny is still with us after 76 years in power. We should not commemorate its founding except to condemn it. The Philadelphia city officials who allowed this travesty have lost their moral compass.
