A California company, Conception, is attempting to create lab-grown human eggs, according to a recent NPR report.
The company claims that the process, called in vitro gametogenesis (IVG), would be an option for people who are unable to conceive. However, many are raising eyebrows at the possibility of this dystopian idea becoming a reality.
Conception’s attempt to grow human eggs in a lab — outside of the natural reproductive process — represents a slippery slope.
In vitro fertilization (IVF), which results in an excess of fertilized eggs that are left frozen indefinitely, is a similar process worthy of ethical consideration. Its abandonment raises questions if one acknowledges fertilization and the unique set of DNA as the commencement of human life. In addition to leading to the same result, IVG would further open the door to the eugenics of picking out embryos with “preferred traits” and discarding the rest.
As just one example, a story by Psychology Today highlights artificial wombs, yet another effort to separate reproduction from its natural process in human bodies.
As long as progress remains an idol in our secular, progress-minded culture, Conception’s project won’t be the last of its kind.
