How do we come to the devil’s alliance of radical Islamism and woke Marxism? How strange it seems that gender fluid atheistic political militants demonstrate virulently for violent religionists who abhor their lifestyle and attitude and who would murder them for it at the drop of a hat.

Marxists are against religion, you say, and with good reason: look what they do when they gain power. Lenin closed the churches and let loose a phalanx of committed Jewish communists to violently dismantle the Jewish community structure in Russia. Xi Jinping has consigned well over a million Muslim Uighurs to what is effectively a vast concentration camp, aiming to extinguish their supernational allegiance to a power above his own. Yet the woke movement, essentially Marxism blended with Deconstructionism with a dash of Franz Fanon, is now in full-throated agreement with Hamas, a group calling themselves the most authentic expression of Islam.

After having set out what seems to be a contradiction — how do militant atheists make enthusiastic common cause with violent proponents of theocracy? — a closer look reveals why it is really a match. First of all, Marxism is a religion. It is in no sense provable before its predicted end time, the transformation of our sorry world of inequality into a socialist paradise that will be the overwhelming proof of Marxism’s truth. So, it is no different than religions in requiring faith in something not yet provable. 

But to make this paradisiacal omelet, eggs — and heads — must be cracked. Any means are justified to reach that end; moral ideas, moral restraint: these are decadent indulgences that allow the current power structure to hold its course. Those who believe in a transcendent morality or lotus eaters, useless parasites on the social body that need to be re-educated or eliminated. 

How does this jibe with Hamas’ doctrines in particular? Although it claims forthrightly its religious nature, and requires faith, it, too, has made the goal whose accomplishment will at last verify its claims a political goal. Its paradise is the Land between the River and the Sea purged of anyone who does not accept the divine right of Islam to govern every aspect of life. For them, this means the murder or expulsion of any other religious community, as they had achieved effectively in their own little kleptocratic state.

But you might insist that Hamas claims to be Muslim, and Islam has a system of laws to which they are accountable and which they deem holy. These laws include restrictions on what may be done during warfare, such as not attacking women or children and not forcing conversion upon Christians or Jews. Marxists, on the other hand, accept contradiction as part of the current nature of the world, and if we must use rampant cruelty to achieve the socialist paradise, that’s ok.

The answer is already evident in the utter disregard of Islamic law requirements in the orgy of murder, sadism, rape, and kidnapping of October 7. For Hamas, like so many Islamist groups, has set law aside to cut straight to the achievement of paradise by the unleashing of every kind of terrific force without restraint. And it is something they celebrate.

How could Hamas embrace such a contradiction — that the holy law that want to establish is established by violating it?

The deep answer comes from the triumph of a certain philosophy within Islam about a millennium ago — occasionalism. This philosophy maintains that the natural world, especially natural causality, is all an illusion. The only truth is God’s power. The true believer, therefore, believes that natural science is heretical, for it takes it for granted that the world is real and its creatures have some kind of power. The occasionalist knows that the world is all illusory and to acknowledge it is to be disloyal to God. He knows he has no ability to cause anything, as to think so would be to deny God as the only cause. He therefore lets go and surrenders to God’s power.

As this thought was taken up and continued by modern movements, like the Wahabis in Arabia and like Hamas, it led to the elevation of militant politics over legal sophistication and constitutional niceties. Only complete triumph of God’s power could ever justify religious claims, not the spiritual triumph of the mystic or the legal triumph of the judge of Islamic law. The power of triumphant Islam is all that matters to them. All restraint, any hesitancy, can only be based on a satanic illusion.

The wokeists have found their ideal partner. Woke deconstructionism leads them to deny all meanings in philosophy or religion. Everything in human life is merely a struggle for power. The wokeist has faith that winning that struggle is the only morality and any means are justified in pursuit of that victory.

Unaware of the embrace of the unreal, the average American has presumed that the woke folk riots and bedlam sprang from a shared morality. Their biblical roots teaching them to introspect and search their hearts; their philosophical roots teach them to have intellectual and moral humility. But in the woke alliance with Hamas, which murders civilians en masse, rapes wives and mothers serially in front of their families before killing them, engages in necrophilia, parades a half-naked , raped and dying woman in the back of a pick-up truck in a victory parade in Gaza to wild cheers, Americans are seeing exactly what and who the wokeists are — destroyers of civilization, nihilists producing only evil and destruction in whatever they do, enemies of all that is good or even just decent.

Let us make common cause now with those of us who are seeing this all for the first time. We can regain our national purpose, our human purpose, if we make that our overriding priority right now.
