In June 2023, Syrian refugee Abdalmasih H. stormed into a playground in Annecy, in the French Alps, at 9 a.m. and began stabbing as many babies as he could in their strollers. Of the six seriously injured, four were children between 22 months and 3 years old. Images of the horror spread around the world. A Spanish journalist, host of one of the country’s most-watched morning shows, commented live on the attack: “This is causing a stir, and in a country like France, these are votes for Le Pen, for the far right. It’s tremendous.”
In August 2025, DeCarlos Brown Jr. murdered young Ukrainian refugee Iryna Zarutska in cold blood, without a word, stabbing her from behind on a train in Charlotte. Images are also spreading around the world. The left, like that shameful Spanish journalist, is outraged because the crime strengthens the right and Trump’s policies. None of the babies should have been stabbed in France, because Abdalmasih should never have entered the country, just as Iryna should never have died in Charlotte, because DeCarlos Brown should never have been released. In both cases, left-wing politicians proposed a debate about mental health care. In France, rather than analyzing the attack as another grotesque Islamist crime, they rushed to label him mentally ill long before any medical evaluation was released. Everything that is wrong, misguided, and manifestly dangerous about leftist discourse is perfectly embodied by Vi Lyles, who is more concerned about the images of the stabbing circulating online than about the victim herself.
It is precisely the stupid progressive ideas about the social reintegration of any person, regardless of what they have done, and precisely the stupid progressive ideas about the social integration of the dangerously mentally ill that are responsible for these attacks, these deaths, and many, many others — too many. We often say that the only person guilty of murder is the murderer. But because the left insists that anyone who commits a crime must be insane and therefore not guilty, the next in the chain of responsibility is the person who allows repeat offenders to walk freely on the streets.
Amid this trashy debate fueled by mainstream left-wing media outlets around the world, no one seems to remember Iryna, who was forced to emigrate to the United States because of the war, in search of prosperity and peace. Iryna represents the kind of immigration we should welcome in the United States and Europe. Abdalmasih H. represents the filth we should never let pass. And Brown represents the scum we should let rot in prison, with or without mental health care.
Everything that is wrong, misguided, and manifestly dangerous about leftist discourse is perfectly embodied by Vi Lyles, who is more concerned about the images of the stabbing circulating online than about the victim herself. Lyles is deeply concerned about the killer’s skin color and fears racist consequences. Perhaps someone should point out to her that nothing fuels racism more than excusing or concealing murders when the killer is black and the victim is white.
The mayor also claims that these kinds of “tragic incidents” force us to examine the “root causes” in our community. And that’s the only thing I agree with her on. Because, in fact, the root causes are clear, in both Charlotte and Annecy: criminals should be in prison, illegal immigrants in their home countries, the mentally ill in former mental asylums, and left-wing politicians as far away from government work as possible.
