The Democrat Party Hates America
By Mark R. Levin
(Threshold Editions, 400 pages, $30)

Mark Levin’s new book, The Democrat Party Hates America, is the most powerful indictment of the Democrats that I’ve ever read. It’s so scathing, with so much information, that I got to the point where I dreaded attempting to write a review. The book is so packed with material that there’s no way to adequately summarize it in 1,000 words. You really need to buy the book and read it yourself.

A quick clarification from the outset: Readers will notice that Levin refers to the party of the Democrats as just that, the “Democrat Party,” though the formal name is the Democratic Party. He surely knows this will rankle the party’s advocates. In fact, there’s a Wikipedia entry for “Democrat Party (epithet)” that states that the term is a pejorative, which Levin certainly succeeds in making of the party with this book. Certain offended liberals claim that this label aims to make Democrat rhyme with “bureaucrat,” which wouldn’t be misplaced. Others whine that it’s an “ugly slur” to make Democrats rhyme with “rats.” I don’t know about that. (READ MORE: Nancy Pelosi Is California Fleein’)

Of course, as a matter of semantics, if Democrats did what the Republican Party does with Republicans, they’d be “Democratics,” but they’re not; they are Democrats, and the party is their party. It is the Democrats’ party. Levin goes with the Democrat Party.

So be it. But enough of that.

Two things immediately struck me when I caught the title of the book, and they’re crucial to Levin’s thesis.

First, Democrats will protest that they don’t hate America. Levin concedes that there are good, patriotic Democrats who don’t. He would counter, however, that the party’s hard-left lurch reveals that many of its most extreme ideologues do hate America, or, at least, how the nation was conceived.

I’m reminded of Levin’s excellent 2021 book, American Marxism. In my review of that book, I mentioned the House Committee on Un-American Activities, which investigated communist infiltration of various institutions. Leftists protested the very name of the committee. How dare anyone accuse these Americans of not being Americans! But, in fact, the committee wasn’t arguing that leftists weren’t American citizens but that they were opposed to the very idea of America as it was founded. That actually made it worse. They were un-American Americans. (READ THE ARTICLE: Un-American Marxism)

“America is less a place than an idea,” said Ronald Reagan. It is indeed. And any American Marxist, especially any member of the Communist Party USA, who swore a literal oath of loyalty to the Soviet Union, was plainly un-American. They were committed to undermining America as we’ve long known and loved it.

Today’s American Marxists, whom Levin again confronts in this book, are likewise hellbent on undermining America. And, sadly, many of them and their cohorts (such as the Democratic Socialists of America) are taking the Democratic Party with them. These radicals have hijacked the party as a Trojan Horse for their agenda — one that militates against all that America was designed for. These far-left Democrats want to “fundamentally transform America.”

That brings me to the second point that hit me immediately.

I first heard the title of Levin’s book while listening to his hugely influential radio show. I laughed and thought, “Boy, Democrats are going to hate that. But, hey, when you’re trying to fundamentally transform the United States of America, don’t be surprised when you get accused of hating America.”

I was pleased to see that that’s exactly where Mark Levin went with this book.

The reference, of course, is to Barack Obama’s revolutionary assertion in Columbia, Missouri, on Oct. 30, 2008, that “[w]e are five days away from fundamentally transforming the United States of America.” What really turned my stomach when I saw the video of Obama’s statement was not merely his outrageous declaration but the grotesque spectacle of ecstatic Democrats behind him clapping like seals.

Levin notes that when Barack Obama said that in 2008, he wasn’t kidding. Such was the “hope and change” he had in mind. “As the title of this book declares, the Democrat Party hates America,” states Levin. “Indeed, if you want to ‘fundamentally transform’ something, you clearly do not love it or even like it…. [I]f someone says, ‘I wish I could fundamentally transform my spouse,’ then you obviously don’t love or like your spouse.’”

That is undeniably true. The essence of conservatism is to conserve America as it was conceived. The progressive project has been one of transformation — or, if progressives prefer, to reform and to evolve. Whatever you call it, the goal is the same: to change the country from what it originally was. And as Mark Levin makes so painstakingly clear, that has never been more obvious than with today’s Democrats.

From culture to media to academia, from science to religion, from entertainment to government, whether the Constitution or Bill of Rights, the Electoral College or Supreme Court, the process of separation of powers and rule of law, cultural views on race and sex and gender, groupism over individualism, centralization over federalism, the teaching of CRT and other racist ideologies, tearing down historic monuments, weakening the military with toxic wokeness, canceling and prosecuting opponents, Levin lays out how today’s Democrats have sought permanent change as well as permanent control. (READ MORE: American Despotism: The Historic Roots of the Constitutional Crisis)

“The Democrat Party stands for the relentless pursuit of power and control,” states Levin. The party does so even as “America was founded on the principle of individual and human liberty and dispersion of political and governmental power.”

The party’s permanent pursuit of power allows it to pursue permanent change — the fundamental transformation. The Democrats have done that by making their party the party of the government.

“The Democrat Party is the party of the state,” sums up Levin.

The party is the state, and vice versa. Thus, the party enlarges the state, which in turn empowers the party. Conservatives seek to limit the state. Democrats seek to expand it. A key reason for Democrats seeking to destroy conservatives is because conservatives threaten the state that is essentially synonymous with their party.

But the problem runs deeper because Democrats have not merely captured the state. As Levin notes, they’ve also captured the conveyor belts of culture — the schools, universities, media, Hollywood, Big Tech. This has been a long march to capture the country.

Those are the broader themes of Mark Levin’s book. There are detailed chapters on the party and its leaders’ anti-black racism and anti-Semitism; on its anti-white racism; on controlling language and thought; and on the party’s “war” on the citizen, nuclear family, and Constitution. Everyone ought to read the chapter on anti-black racism and anti-Semitism. The Democrats are the party of slavery, Jim Crow, and the KKK (the Republican Party was founded as the anti-slavery party). The party’s racism wasn’t an isolated thing of the 19th century. Read what Levin shares on Woodrow Wilson, FDR, LBJ, and Joe Biden. How liberals who claim to oppose racism could look beyond the vile bigotry of Democrat icons is an appalling double standard.

Among the icons, none are more revered by Democrats than FDR, whose disgusting racist and anti-Semitic statements and actions should forever get him canceled by today’s party of the cancel culture. And yet, he has gotten a pass. In this book, Roosevelt is exposed.

You’ll want a highlighter for these chapters. Read them, remember the material, and share it. It is there that Levin most strongly makes his case. Go through those chapters and then ask yourself the crucial question at hand: Would a party that truly loves America be doing this to America?

Levin’s book is an indictment of the Democrats as well as a warning. It offers hope amidst their onslaught: “The Democrat Party has, in fact, largely conquered America’s cultural, educational, and media institutions, but there still remains significant resistance,” notes Levin. “Millions of Americans reject its radical ideology, do not want to fundamentally transform America, and are now awake to what the Democrat Party is doing to destroy the country.”

It is among those millions where hope lies. It is the rest of us who form that resistance. Equipped with Levin’s book, Americans will have a better understanding of what they’re up against from the party of the Democrats.
