Last Saturday I explained in The American Spectator what was about to happen in Spain. On Thursday the tragedy was consummated: Sanchez became prime minister with the support of the communists, the Catalan coup plotters, the friends of terrorists, and all the tiny regional nationalist parties that share a common hatred of Spain. The price the socialist leader paid for their support is the now defunct equality of Spaniards in the eyes of the law, the separation of powers, and generally speaking, the democratic regime of 1978. This is none other than the socialism of the 21st century. It matters little whether it’s Biden, Massa, Sanchez, or Maduro. They are already exactly the same: they will do anything before the right governs. Whatever it takes.
I stand with Milei: there is nothing to talk about with this totalitarian left that only seeks to annihilate any dissent.
My article was widely read in America and Europe, and that made the usual totalitarians’ tempers flare. The proof is that, along with the usual string of insulting messages, 48 hours later my personal website, and even the website of my music magazine and podcast, Popes80.com, were hacked and taken down. I can’t say I’m surprised. (READ MORE from Itxu Diaz: A New Far-Left Dictatorship Is Coming to Europe)
In 2017, when Catalan secessionists attempted a coup d’état and declared Catalonia an independent state, I wrote about what had happened in an article for The Daily Beast, and within 24 hours my Wikipedia entry was vandalized and then deleted forever. This, for someone who makes a living writing books, with no support other than his own windows to the world, was a blow that evidently led me to question whether it was worth it.
For those of us who are not heroes, no, it’s not worth it. However, as my regular readers know, a picture of John Wayne with his Winchester 73 watches over me as I sit at my desk and I reckon that, if I didn’t take part in the uncomfortable battles, the Duke wouldn’t let me sleep at night. It is more an issue of conscience and love of freedom and truth, than wanting to change the world.
The president of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, who is perfectly aware of the situation in Spain, wrote a tweet at full speed to congratulate Pedro Sánchez, with such enthusiasm that it read more like a private Tinder message than a tweet. Someday we will have to analyze the EU’s invaluable cooperation with every left-wing dictatorial government, and its belligerence towards the right-wing democratic governments. The founding fathers of the EU would throw up if they could see this.
Spain and European conservatism have received a hard blow. But it is not a defeat. Argentina, which already went through all this some time ago, is the clearest example that socialism will always end up toppling, even if sometimes several generations have to pass and people need to sink deeper and deeper into the abyss of poverty before it happens. Hopefully Milei will now succeed in putting an end to Kirchnerism forever. Hopefully the elections will not be stolen from under him, but in any case, all we need to see are the crowds he gathers to realize that no matter what happens, he has already won the most important battle. Millions of Argentines, most of them very young, crave freedom and despise Peronist corruption. This was unthinkable just a couple of years ago.
Milei made a statement during his campaign that became famous: “you can’t give so much as a millimeter to shitty leftists. Because if you think differently, they will liquidate you.” We must fight the postmodern left with every democratic weapon we dispose of, because behind their rainbow flags, their sentimental arguments, and their pretty words, there hides only extreme sectarianism, a disguised totalitarianism, much more radical than that of the late twentieth century left. If ever the international left decides to abandon the Bolivarian path, the communist path, and embrace social democracy, or any other ruinous ideology, we will be able to sit at a table again and discuss taxes, social policies, or employment rates, as much as is needed. But at this moment in history, I stand with Milei: there is nothing to talk about with this totalitarian left that only seeks to annihilate any dissent. We must unmask all their lies, we must condemn them, we must put pressure on every institution and at every second, because otherwise, it is only a matter of time before they twist constitutions and do whatever it takes to sneak in through the sewers of the State and remain in power forever, duplicating the success story — terrifying success — of Venezuela all over the world.
