Last night, my wife and I had an extremely brief quarrel. I thought she was mocking a legal problem I have. I yelled at her about it. She apologized, but I apologized first. And then we watched a spectacular western, The Wild Bunch, which I have seen several times, and so has my wife. I lay next to her in bed and held her hand. She lay next to me and held my hand. In a few minutes, we were both not just calmer, but happy. My wife is a goddess. An actual goddess sent from heaven. I have to remember that always the goal of every day is not to show who’s right and who’s wrong. The goal is to get along and prolong our marriage. We have been married since 1968, with a brief break in 1973 to reorganize our brains, and then back together two years later, more or less. And then, thanks largely to the 12 Steps, I see and pray for our being together until we sleep together under the soil with our son, Tommy, who is already in eternity. Stay together. Don’t fight, don’t try to show who is the better lawyer. And then immortality. “What is bound on earth is bound in heaven.” We try to live it.

And by the way, I read an article this morning about the new head of CBS News. It broke my heart that John Coyne is no longer around to discuss it with. Just broke my heart.
