For the Left, the only good Indian is a fake Indian.
It seems that way when considering that so many of the Native Americans hyped by progressives turn out as much Indian as those Improper Bostonians who polluted their harbor with the British.
Mary Simon, the first partly indigenous person to serve as Canada’s governor general, just stripped Buffy Sainte-Marie of her appointment to the Order of Canada, the highest civilian honor in the Great White North.
When does she give back her 15 honorary doctorates?
“CBC reported in October 2023 that it found Sainte-Marie’s birth certificate, which says she was born in 1941 in Massachusetts,” The Toronto Star explained. “The document lists the baby and parents as white and includes a signature of an attending physician — information CBC says is corroborated by Sainte-Marie’s marriage certificate, a life insurance policy and the U.S. census. Family members in the U.S., including Sainte-Marie’s younger sister, also told CBC that Sainte-Marie was not adopted and does not have Indigenous ancestry.”
Not only is she not Native American, Sainte-Marie hails from Stoneham, Mass., and not the Piapot Reserve, Saskatchewan (the absence of a Terrance & Phillip/Ike Broflovski oval-head bisected below the equator seems, in retrospect, an overlooked clue).
The one-hit wonder, who turned “Mister Can’t You See” into a spot on Sesame Street and other gigs requiring a token Native American, insisted after the CBC’s exposé that she “will not stoop to respond to every false allegation.”
Buffy Sainte-Marie walks on a long trail of tears forged by others of her tribe, the Pretendians.
Elizabeth Warren infamously parlayed a degree from Rutgers Law (U.S. News–ranked #103) and her concocted heritage to a spot on the faculty of Harvard Law, which, at the time I looked into the matter a few years ago, counted, aside from a handful of specialists in fields outside of the law, only graduates from the top-ten law schools as professors and assistant professors. “My name is Sacheen Littlefeather,” a pigtailed mix of German, French, Dutch, and Mexican beauty told those assembled in 1973 for the Academy Awards. “I’m Apache, and I’m president of the National Native American Affirmative Image Committee. I’m representing Marlon Brando this evening. He very regretfully cannot accept this very generous award. And the reasons for this being are the treatment of American Indians today by the film industry.”
Exposure mercifully arrived posthumously for the straight-out-of-Salinas Maria Louise Cruz.
Ward Churchill was not so lucky. After he described the victims of the 9/11 attacks on the World Trade Center as “little Eichmanns,” the then-University of Colorado professor drew applause from screwballs and scrutiny from those little Eichmann types. The Rocky Mountain News traced his family tree to prior to the Revolutionary War, and found not a single Native American. Churchill, who based so much of his activism on his fake ancestry, responded to exposure with hostility: “I have never claimed to be goddamned Sitting Bull.”
The imposters seem strong evidence for Native Americans to point to in any Coolest Ethnicity Competition. Nobody, even on Columbus Day, poses as an Italian.
Why not? Beverly Jean Santamaria’s (Buffy Sainte-Marie’s name at birth) people first spread civilization and then Christianity to barbarians in Europe and beyond. Luciano Pavarotti, Francis of Assisi, Galileo Galilei, Leonardo da Vinci, Sophia Loren, and Guglielmo Marconi seem like a pretty good crowd to imitate if not impersonate.
To the victims go the spoils. But victors, not victims, populate Buffy Sainte-Marie’s true family tree. In an upside-down world imbued by cultural Marxism, people cite not the greatness of their ancestors but their impoverishment. This carries societal cachet.
The oppressor-oppressed mental straitjacket indicates heads are not in the right place. The ongoing indigenous burlesque of Sainte-Marie and so many others exposes hearts in the wrong place, too.
