At a bizarre display during a congressional hearing, United States Postmaster General Louis DeJoy threw a tantrum during questioning from Republican congressmen, including covering his ears as he was interrogated on the shortcomings of the postal service with regards to mail-in ballots.
As The Hill reports, DeJoy was being questioned by Congressman Rich McCormick (R-Ga.) over the postal service’s weaknesses in handling massive amounts of mail-in ballots in federal elections, during which Congressman McCormick said that DeJoy would not get an “A grade” for his performance.
“You were graded by the United States people, and they don’t use your service anymore,” said Congressman McCormick.
“That is not true,” Dejoy shot back as McCormick continued talking over him. “Our office is growing.”
“You are responsible for the fall of the Postal Service and the lack of accountability,” McCormick responded. DeJoy interrupted by saying “this Congress is responsible for it falling apart. I am trying to fix the Postal Service.”
DeJoy then told McCormick “you’re talking to yourself” as he covered his ears with his hands.
DeJoy has been facing widespread criticism ever since the 2020 election, where large-scale mail-in balloting was first implemented at the federal level due to the then-ongoing Chinese Coronavirus pandemic. The inefficiency of the postal service in delivering ballots on time led to states still counting votes for days, even weeks, after the election. The nature in which the late arrivals of ballot batches suddenly swung the result away from then-President Donald Trump and in favor of Democrat Joe Biden led to accusations of voter fraud.
The use of mail-in balloting continued in the 2024 election, though the Republican Party embraced the practice more than it did in 2020. The results of this election were determined much more quickly and more efficiently than they were four years ago, though criticisms of the postal service remain nonetheless.
