Far-left protesters at the University of Chicago, ostensibly protesting the ongoing war in Israel, have announced a list of demands from the university that have nothing to do with the current conflict in the Middle East.
As reported by Fox News, the encampment, which has informally named itself “The U Chicago Popular University for Gaza,” began on Monday and released its list of demands on Tuesday. It is the latest example of protests that have suddenly appeared on college campuses across the country.
One of the lead protesters listed the demands at a rally, starting off by saying that “The U Chicago Popular University For Gaza demands that U Chicago divest from the Gaza genocide.”
The protester then went on to say that “we demand that U Chicago divest from weapons manufacturers arming Israel and its partnerships with militarized Israeli universities, and cut ties with the Israel Institute. We also demand that U Chicago divest from all interrelated forces of death and violence into which it is currently complicit, especially fossil fuel production, UCPD and construction projects that fuel South Side displacement.”
The speaker then went even further, with additional demands including “that the university disclose university investments. We demand full transparency into U Chicago’s budget, investments and holdings, particularly its financial involvement in Israeli apartheid, weapons manufacturing, fossil fuel production, property ownership and investment on the South Side and UCPD. This includes a commitment to regularly disclosing data on funds and holdings in each of these areas. It also includes creating a requiring committee of students, faculty, staff and other community stakeholders to facilitate divestment and ensure that future investment decisions follow established, justice-based guidelines.”
The students gathered at the protest repeatedly chanted violent, anti-Semitic, and anti-American chants, including “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free,” “Long live the intifada,” and “smash the settler Zionist state.”
Protests against Israel have spread across the country ever since the terrorist attacks against the Jewish state by the Islamic terrorist group Hamas on October 7th. The demonstrations increased in quantity and violence after an Iranian attack against Israel on April 13th, with rioters at college campuses increasingly turning to vandalism and assault against police officers and Jewish students.
