On Tuesday, President Donald Trump ordered the Department of Justice (DOJ) to terminate all remaining U.S. attorneys who had been appointed by Joe Biden.
As the New York Post reports, President Trump made his announcement in a Truth Social post, declaring that the layoffs are necessary due to the DOJ having become “politicized like never before.”
“Over the past four years, the Department of Justice has been politicized like never before,” said the president. “Therefore, I have instructed the termination of ALL remaining “Biden Era” U.S. Attorneys. We must ‘clean house’ IMMEDIATELY, and restore confidence. America’s Golden Age must have a fair Justice System – THAT BEGINS TODAY!”
The White House has already fired multiple federal prosecutors appointed by President Trump’s predecessor, including those who were directly involved in the cases against the peaceful protestors at the U.S. Capitol on January 6th, 2021. Other prosecutors who were either fired or reassigned included those involved in the widely unprecedented FBI raid on President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate in August of 2023.
The Trump Administration’s DOJ has also fired multiple officials who were part of the special counsel investigation against President Trump by former prosecutor Jack Smith. Smith attempted to bring criminal charges against the former president and then-candidate; the cases primarily focused on President Trump’s efforts to combat widespread voter fraud in the 2020 election, as well as his alleged possession of documents at his Florida estate. Both cases have since been dismissed due to President Trump’s return to office.
As previously reported, President Trump has already nominated a candidate for the crucial position of U.S. Attorney for the District of Columbia: Ed Martin, a defense attorney for several J6 defendants, who has been serving as the interim U.S. Attorney.
