Washington D.C.’s “sanctuary city” status no longer applies now that President Trump has federalized the capital’s law enforcement, according to Border Czar Tom Homan.
Homan appeared on Fox News with host Martha MacCallum Wednesday to discuss the D.C. crime crackdown that has enraged Democrats and spurred activists to take to the streets.
“Does the fact that there’s National Guard now there—it’s a sanctuary city, like sanctuary cities across the country—but it’s unique in that it has federal control, and now you have the National Guard on the ground side by side with ICE, does that combination basically negate the sanctuary city status in Washington, D.C.— at least for these 30 days, in terms of what you can do there, Tom?” MacCallum asked.
“Yes,” Homan replied. “I think D.C. under federal control is not going to be a sanctuary city.
“We’re working with the police hand in hand, and when we encounter a criminal illegal alien, they will be turned over to ICE,” he continued. “And that’s the way it should be.
“I’m not saying every illegal alien in D.C. is a criminal. But many are,” Homan added. “There is no sanctuary for these people in the city of D.C.”
The mobilization of federal officers into Washington D.C. has prompted a massive outcry from Democrats and their allies in the media.
On Tuesday, a group of anti-Trump protesters marched in the street, shouted through bullhorns and blew whistles.
Tense scenes erupted late Wednesday, as protesters clashed with law enforcement in the nation’s capital.
A video captured street agitators chanting “get off our streets!” as police were setting up a checkpoint along a popular D.C. nightlife corridor.
“Why are you here? You are trying to arrest innocent people? What’s your purpose? What’s your goal? What’s the motive? Why won’t you show your face? Do you look yourself in the mirror and think ‘I did a good job today’?” one agitator bellowed at officers.
In a separate incident Wednesday night, an unhinged man in a pink shirt threw a Subway sandwich at a federal officer outside the restaurant.
The man, identified as Sean Charles Dunn, 37, was captured on video screaming in the faces of officers and calling them “fascists” before hitting a U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent in the chest with the sandwich.
“The FBI arrested this individual last night,” FBI Director Kash Patel announced on X, Thursday. “He has been charged with felony assault on a federal officer”
U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro said in a statement that “the police are not out there to get pushed around or beat up.”
Pirro stated on X that “This guy thought it was funny,” and that if you “Assault a law enforcement officer,” “you’ll be prosecuted.”
