American Greatness contributor Steve Cortes, the president and founder of the League of American Voters, said that Speaker Mike Johnson should focus on defending U.S. borders and less on his push for additional funding for Ukraine.

Cortes’ comments are in response to a letter from former U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in which Pompe ramps up the pressure on U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson to bring a new military aid package for Ukraine to a vote. 

Cortes is correct to note that Johnson and his colleagues in Congress need to choose whether they are representing the American people or a foreign nation via the Washington War Machine.

At a time when the average taxpayer in America is struggling to make ends meet, public support for the Ukrainian conflict is becoming a harder sell as many question the wisdom of prolonging the conflict. More than half of Republican voters say the U.S. is spending too much on Ukraine.

Still, Speaker Johnson is apparently prepared to “risk his Speakership” over the push for increased Ukraine funding.
