U.S. House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) is touting current data from U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) showing illegal border crossings have nearly dropped to levels not seen in decades under the new Trump administration’s closures.

Johnson is using the nearly 90% drop in illegal crossings to underscore that GOP members of Congress were correct when they asserted that then president Biden had the authority to prevent illegal immigration all along, but chose not to.

Earlier this month, the New York Post published leaked CBP data that showed the U.S. to be on track to have the lowest number of illegal border crossings in at least 25 years.

Mark Krikorian, the executive director at the Center for Immigration Studies, told the NY Post that if the trend continues, the U.S. could see the lowest number illegal crossings in nearly six decades.

Krikorian said, “If you kind of break down the numbers, divide them by 365, we haven’t had numbers this low since the 1960s. So we’re talking 60-year lows if it’s sustained, obviously.”

Border security was one of the primary issues on which the Trump/Vance team campaigned and Trump wasted no time in deploying thousands of additional troops to the border and ending the Biden administration’s “catch and release” policy with a mass deportation effort.

Speaker Johnson has also said that a bill requiring proof of U.S. citizenship before voting in federal elections will be a legislative priority for the 119th Congress, stating, “legislation makes clear that House Republicans will deliver on their promises of securing the border, unleashing American energy, protecting American elections, protecting innocent life, and returning to common sense.”
