On Wednesday, the far-left Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC) fired over 60 employees amid allegations of financial corruption.
As Fox News reports, the layoffs even went as high as several top officials in the union representing SPLC workers, which was first formed in 2019 in order to combat the organization’s “inequitable” practices.
“Today, SPLC – my employer – laid off over 60 of our union members, essentially shuttering multiple departments,” said ex-employee Hannah Gais on X. “Speaking in a personal capacity, I endorse each and every single word of this statement from our union. [A]n organization with this much money has no excuse.”
The union statement in question noted that all of the over 60 employees fired were union members, including the union’s chairperson and five stewards.
“We are devastated for our union and for our colleagues,” the union said in its statement. The union went on to accuse the SPLC of “hoarding” donations and “gutting its staff by a quarter,” despite having nearly $1 billion in reserves.
In its own statement, the SPLC said that it planned to streamline its activities and broader operations in order to more efficiently promote its agenda.
“We announced internally the consolidation of certain programs and activities as well as the elimination of others, resulting in staff reductions,” the SPLC’s press team wrote. “This was a difficult but necessary decision to focus and align our work with our programmatic priorities and goals. We deeply value the contributions of all our staff and their commitment to ensuring the promise of equal justice is a reality for all.”
The SPLC, founded in 1971, was once known for its civil rights activism in defense of a wide variety of clients, including multiple successful civil suits in defense of members of the Ku Klux Klan in the 1980s.
But in more recent years, the group has shed its appearance of nonpartisanship and has become increasingly far-left, with its new purpose being to designate virtually all conservative activist groups and individuals as “hate groups.” The group has targeted members of Congress and Christian leaders, as well as conservative media commentators such as the late Rush Limbaugh. The SPLC’s “hate group” designation against the Christian organization Family Research Council (FRC) in 2010 led to an attempted shooting in the FRC’s headquarters just two years later by a pro-LGBT activist. The gunman was stopped by security before anyone could be killed, with one security guard sustaining non-lethal injuries.
