The governors of three so-called “sanctuary states” will be testifying before a House Committee today as they answer questions about their respective policies toward migrants and failure to cooperate with federal immigration laws.

New York Gov. Kathy Hochul, Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz have been called to testify before the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee on “sanctuary policies” in their states.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan (R-OH) told Fox Business that the very concept of sanctuary status will be on trial as the governors will be asked to justify why local law enforcement would be prohibited from cooperating with federal law agents who are enforcing federal immigration laws.

Jordan admitted that Congress does not have the power to prevent a city or state from declaring itself a sanctuary jurisdiction but it does have the power to withhold federal funding from those those who jurisdictions that do.

Oversight Chair James Comey (R-KY), is expected to draw a clear line as to why these policies are under fire as he’s expected to open his remarks with the statement, “Let me be clear: Sanctuary policies don’t protect Americans. They protect criminal illegal aliens.”

The timing of the hearing follows several days of unrest in Los Angeles, California after violent demonstrations erupted following deportation raids by federal Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.

Those demonstrations are expected to spread to others U.S. cities as part of an organized effort to sow unrest over the Trump administration’s illegal immigration crackdown.

Today’s hearings are a follow up to a sanctuary city hearing in March where four Democratic Mayors, including Eric Adams, of New York, Mike Johnston of Denver, Brandon Johnson of Chicago and Michelle Wu of Boston, were questioned over their policies and how they affect public safety as well as the associated costs.
