Two recent polls reveal that a near majority of the American people support President Donald Trump’s efforts to crack down on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) in the federal government, the private sector, and education.
As reported by the Daily Caller, the first is an NBC News poll which shows that 49% of respondents think DEI initiatives should be shut down “because they create divisions and inefficiencies in the workplace by putting too much emphasis on race and other social factors over merit, skills and experience,” while 48% support DEI. In the same poll, a plurality of 43% of voters said that they had negative views of DEI, compared to 39% who had positive views.
The second poll, from The Economist and YouGov, found that 45% of respondents are in favor of eliminating DEI in education and the government, with 40% saying they wanted to keep such programs in place.
One of the top priorities of the second Trump Administration has been the effort to eliminate DEI, which has been widely criticized as disproportionately favoring non-Whites and sexual minorities in the hiring process, even if they are less qualified than White applicants. President Trump signed an executive order on his first day back in office ordering a crackdown on DEI across the federal government, denouncing such initiatives as “radical and wasteful.”
In response to the ongoing purge of DEI in the federal government, many businesses across the country have also been reversing their DEI practices. Some have faced legal challenges, in the aftermath of the Supreme Court’s ruling in 2023 that declared affirmative action, a similar race-based practice, to be unconstitutional.
The NBC poll featured a sample size of 1,000 registered voters, and was conducted from March 7th to March 11th. The margin of error is 3.1%. The Economist/YouGov poll’s sample size consisted of 1,609 American adults, and was held from January 19th to 21st, with a margin of error of 3.2%.
