President Trump has signaled support for a proposed bill targeting nonprofit organizations involved in organizing riots by removing their tax-exempt status and making them ineligible for federal funding.
The “No Tax Dollars for Riots” Act was introduced by Rep. Kevin Kiley (R-CA) who explained how the nonprofit Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights (CHIRLA), which played a pivotal role in organizing violent riots against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in Los Angeles, received $34 million in state funding and some federal funding.
Kiley says CHIRLA also gave $500,000 to help elect Governor Gavin Newsom.
Kiley said that CHIRLA is effectively operating as a government subsidiary and its actions illustrate why taxpayer funding must not be used to create conditions like the riots seen recently in Los Angeles.
CHIRLA is accused of tracking ICE agents and sharing their real-time location with rioters in order to allow them to more effectively attack and obstruct federal immigration enforcers.
President Trump endorsed the No Tax Dollars for Riots Act in a post on Truth Social saying:
Congressman Kevin Kiley’s ‘No Tax Dollars for Riots’ legislation should be passed immediately. I am hereby instructing my Administration not to pay any money to these radicalized groups, regardless of the legislation. They get paid to incite riots, burn down or destroy a city, then come back to the trough to get money to help rebuild it. No more money!!!
Meanwhile, Riley expressed gratitude for Trump’s endorsement of his bill, saying, “We have learned that the horrific violence in Los Angeles was fueled by taxpayer dollars. This is absolutely unacceptable. I am grateful to President Trump for endorsing my bill, the No Tax Dollars for Riots Act, to assure this is not allowed to happen again.”
The House Judiciary Committee, of which Rep. Kiley is a member, has also opened an investigation into CHIRLA’s use of public funds on criminal activity.
