NextImg:New York Mayor Suggests Reversing Sanctuary City Laws

In a stunning reversal, New York City Mayor Eric Adams (D-N.Y.) announced his intentions to roll back a number of “sanctuary city” laws that made the Big Apple a place where hordes of illegal aliens could go to escape federal immigration authorities.

According to the Washington Free Beacon, Adams made his announcement on Tuesday during a briefing with reporters.

“I want to go back to the standards of the previous mayors [Michael Bloomberg and Ed Koch] who I believe subscribed to my belief that people who are suspected of committing serious crimes in this city should be held accountable,” said Adams. “[Immigrants] can have due process, but we should be communicating with ICE, and if ICE makes the determination of deporting, then they should, so no one’s taking away from anyone’s due process.”

His remarks mark a complete 180-degree turn from his initial stance upon being elected Mayor in 2021, when he declared that “New York City will remain a sanctuary city under an Adams Administration.” The reversal follows a surge in high-profile crimes committed by illegal aliens in the city, including the vicious beating of two NYPD officers by a group of illegals; most of them were then released on bail and tried to flee to California, only to be arrested in Arizona and sent back to New York to face charges.

Even more recently, the NYPD announced the arrest of seven illegals who were part of a large robbery ring. In response, Mayor Adams said he “philosophically disagree[s]” with the idea of letting the ringleader “have two years before he’s actually convicted.”

“The mere fact we cannot share with ICE that this person has committed three robberies, that this person is part of an organized gang crew, mere fact that we can’t say that, and can’t communicate with that, is problematic for me,” Adams explained.

Adams’ change of tone reflects the increasing severity of the mass migration crisis, which has led to even some prominent Democrats backing away from their prior support for the concept of “sanctuary” cities and states, which harbor illegals and deliberately refuse to cooperate with federal authorities. But the party leadership, including Joe Biden, still support open borders and sanctuaries for illegals.
