The country of Mexico has threatened a lawsuit against tech giant Google after the company’s decision to rename the Gulf of Mexico to the “Gulf of America” on its maps.

As reported by Axios, Google changed the name following President Donald Trump’s executive order establishing the new name for the body of water off the southern coast of the United States. Google applied similar name changes for other iconic landmarks that President Trump renamed, including Mt. McKinley in Alaska.

On Monday, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum held a press conference to declare that she considered Google’s name change to be “incorrect.”

“What Google is doing here is changing the name of the continental shelf of Mexico and Cuba, which has nothing to do with Trump’s decree,” Sheinbaum falsely stated. “We do not agree with this.”

Sheinbaum added that she “will wait for Google’s response” to a letter that her foreign minister had sent to the company. If she receives no response, then she “will proceed to court.”

The name change only applies to people who live in the United States; those living in Mexico will still see the name appear on Google Maps as “Gulf of Mexico.”

The same name changes have been reflected in other prominent tech companies’ maps, including Apple Maps.

Sheinbaum’s threat marks the latest attempt by the Mexican president to spar with the Trump Administration. President Trump had previously announced steep tariffs on all Mexican goods unless the country drastically increased its own border security in order to stem the flow of illegal aliens into the U.S. After initial grandstanding, Sheinbaum backed down and announced an increase in troops and security measures along the border, after which President Trump announced a delay in the implementation of his tariffs.
