Last week, American Greatness reported that Rep. Don Bacon (R-Neb.) said that House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) might just “risk his Speakership” over a vote for more Ukraine funding, and yesterday on CBS Face the Nation, House Foreign Affairs Chair Mike McCaul (R-Texas) kicked the ball on Ukraine funding to Johnson.
McCaul, when pressed by CBS correspondent Margaret Brennan as to when the Ukraine aid might come to a vote, answered, “This week.”
The question remains whether Johnson will risk his his speakership in order to push more funding for Ukraine. Johnson remains on thin ice with a number of GOP House members who are opposed to the ongoing aid to Ukraine, including Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) who has filed a motion to vacate the Speaker’s seat if he continues to push the funding bill.
Earlier this month Green noted that Speaker Johnson was going against the will of 70% of the American public in pushing the funding vote.
Rep. Eli Crane (R-AZ) earlier this month said sending more taxpayer dollars to Ukraine should be off the table and replaced with a push for peace talks.
Congressional pushback against increased aid followed Ukraine’s decision to cancel elections that would have been held two weeks ago under the Ukrainian Constitution. A battle for the speakership is likely looming.
