House Judiciary Chairman Rep. Jim Jordan (R-OH) is investigating threats against Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) facilities after three House Democrats are accused of helping to “storm” a New Jersey detention center last week.
Jordan told Fox News Digital that a hearing will be scheduled for next Tuesday and will call former ICE as well as Dept. of Homeland Security (DHS) officials as witnesses.
The hearing is expected to cover growing threats to national security as well as to ICE operations, including the Delaney Hall Detention Center in Newark, New Jersey.
The hearing will be led by the House Judiciary Committee’s subcommittee on oversight, a panel led by Rep. Jeff Van Drew (R-NJ).
The three Democratic members of Congress who participated in a rowdy protest last week at the New Jersey detention center include Reps. Bonnie Watson Coleman (D-NJ) , Rob Menendez (D-NJ), and LaMonica McIver (D-NJ), who rushed into the facility, alongside other protestors, when gates were opened to admit a bus with detainees.
The three Democrats who are accused of “storming” the detention center have insisted that they have the right to enter the facility as federal officials.
Republicans say the protestors endangered both detainees and law enforcement in an effort to score political points.
Congressman Buddy Carter (R-GA) has introduced a resolution that would strip all three Democrats of their committee assignments.
In response, the three Democrats released a statement saying, “As we all know, Members of Congress have a legal right to conduct oversight at any DHS detention facility without prior notice, and that’s exactly what we were doing last week. This week, we’re back in Washington doing exactly what New Jerseyans sent us here to do: delivering for them.”
Republican officials and lawmakers are weighing punishments ranging from censure to criminal charges against those members of Congress who participated in the protest.
