The House Freedom Caucus is officially backing a stopgap measure that could lead to a government shutdown if it is passed.

According to Axios, the Freedom Caucus sent a letter to Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) on Wednesday saying that they prefer a one-year spending stopgap bill if they do not get the chance to prioritize other policy concerns through the current budget process.

“If we are not going to secure significant policy changes or even keep spending below the caps adopted by bipartisan majorities less than one year ago,” the letter asks, “why would we proceed when we could instead pass a year-long funding resolution that would save Americans $100 billion in year one?”

Freedom Caucus members expressed their concerns and opposition to another omnibus bill that would lump numerous unrelated policies in with a broader funding of the federal government, which Democrats have used to fund key agenda items such as “green” energy initiatives. House conservatives prefer that each major policy be funded through individual bills rather than be combined together into one spending package.

If a new budget is not approved by April 30th, the government will start seeing cuts of 1% across the board, something to which Democrats are opposed.

If Johnson sides with the Freedom Caucus, then a shutdown appears likely. If Johnson opposes the Freedom Caucus, he risks invoking the same wrath from conservatives that led to the ouster of his predecessor, disgraced former Congressman Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.).

The spending stopgap measures currently in place are expected to expire on March 1st and March 8th.
