With the National Defense Authorization Act up for a vote in Congress this week, Congresswoman Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) has proposed an amendment that would strip nearly $300 million earmarked for Ukraine that’s cleverly hidden within the funding bill.

Greene’s Amendment is titled “Prohibition of Assistance to Ukraine” and states: “None of the funds made available by this Act may be used for Assistance to Ukraine.”

Greene quotes from the Department of Defense Mission Statement which reads, in part: “Our mission is to provide the military forces needed to deter war and ensure our nation’s security.

The Georgia Congresswoman notes that funding a war in Ukraine is contrary to the DOD’s mission statement and pushes the U.S. closer to war with Russia by furthering aggression.

Rep. Mike Rogers (R-AL) took aim at Greene’s amendment, claiming that there is nothing within this year’s NDAA authorizing assistance to Ukraine and that funding to Ukraine is provided through supplemental appropriations bills.

But Green says that hidden within the bill text is an allocation to the Defense Security Cooperation Agency (DSCA) which is the account in the NDAA that funds Ukraine. She notes that the Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI) which annually appropriates $300 million to Ukraine would receive the same authorization again this year.

According to Greene, 89 Republicans, including Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) voted for this amendment last time and she questions why Congress should continue to provide funding to a country that has put American citizens and members of Congress on an enemies list.
