NextImg:Former Capitol Police Chief Brutally Factchecks Pelosi After She Slams Trump For Deploying National Guard in D.C. Crime Crackdown

The lawman who was the chief of Capitol Police on January 6, 2021, issued a scathing factcheck to Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) Monday, after she slammed President Trump for deploying the National Guard in Washington D.C. to address the city’s violent crime epidemic.

“Donald Trump delayed deploying the National Guard on January 6th when our Capitol was under violent attack and lives were at stake,” Pelosi, 85, posted on X. “Now, he’s activating the DC Guard to distract from his incompetent mishandling of tariffs, health care, education and immigration — just to name a few blunders.”

Former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund couldn’t resist clapping back at the former speaker.

“Ma’am, it is long past time to be honest with the American people,” Sund reponded on X.

On January 3, I requested National Guard assistance, but your Sergeant at Arms denied it. Under federal law (2 U.S.C. §1970), I was prohibited from calling them in without specific approval. That same day, Carol Corbin at the Pentagon offered National Guard support, but I was forced to decline because I lacked the legal authority.

On January 6, while the Capitol was under attack and despite my repeated calls, your Sergeant at Arms again denied my urgent requests for over 70 agonizing minutes, “running it up the chain” for your approval.

When I needed assistance, it was denied. Yet when it suited you, you ordered fencing topped with concertina wire and surrounded the Capitol with thousands of armed National Guard troops.

Sund, a 30-plus year veteran of D.C. law enforcement, has repeatedly detailed in both public interviews and in testimony before Congress his deep frustration at not getting the National Guard help that he believed would have been a “game changer” during the Capitol Hill riot.

He resigned from his position on Jan. 8, 2021, amid pressure from Congress and the Capitol Police union.

President Trump authorized the deployment of as many as 20,000 National Guard troops in the days before Jan. 6, 2021, but the offer of troops was reportedly turned down by Washington Mayor Muriel Bowser and Pelosi.

Pelosi has never publicly taken responsibility for her failure to secure the Capitol grounds on that day. As speaker, she controlled House operations and security on the House side of the Capitol, but her office refused multiple requests to deploy the National Guard.

Documentary footage recorded by her daughter Alexandra Pelosi on January 6, 2021, however shows the then-Speaker repeatedly saying “I take full responsibility.”

“We have totally failed. We have to take some responsibility for not holding the security accountable for what could have happened,” Pelosi said at the time. She also lamented: “Oh my god, I cannot believe the stupidity of this. And I take the full responsibility.”

Since then, including in today’s brazen X post, Pelosi has placed all of the blame for the J6 debacle on President Trump.
